Frequently Asked Questions
What is A.M. Schwarz facial profile classification?
A.M. Schwarz (1954) described three facial profile types based on the angle at Subnasale. Straight (>170°) = balanced. Convex (chin posterior) = Class II tendency. Concave (chin anterior) = Class III tendency.
Where do I place the 3 landmarks?
1. Forehead (Glabella) — most anterior point of the forehead.
2. Subnasale (Sn) — the groove/junction below the nose base and upper lip.
3. Soft-tissue Chin (Pogonion) — most anterior point of the chin.
What does a Convex profile mean?
The chin is set posteriorly relative to the forehead — skeletal Class II tendency. May indicate mandibular retrognathism or maxillary protrusion. Cephalometric analysis is recommended.
